Snorkelling at Gatas Bay

Observation of corals and marine animals in connection with corals The Cape Verde numbers are on the top 10 list of "hot spots" for the biodiversity of corals, although there are no real coral reefs in the archipelago.

Here, there are a number of locations with rich coral communities. Gatas Bay on the North-East coast of Boa Vista offers optimal natural conditions for the development of corals and safe snorkelling activities.

"Gatas" refers to the local name of the nurse shark. Aggregations of this shark species occur in the area during the summer. The coral community in this bay is characterised by hermatypic hard coral species, which support a special variety of marine life.
Snorkelling tours are only possible at high tide, as the bay becomes very shallow at low tide and the coral heads protrude from the sea surface.

Equipment provided at no extra cost (wetsuit, shoes, life jacket, mask and snorkel) is available. We do not use fins to avoid damaging the fragile corals.

The trip to As Gatas (off-road vehicle) takes about 50 minutes from Sal Rei. We usually spend 45-60 minutes in the water.

On the way back we stop in a bar in a small village for a drink and a little snack.
